JaRanks privacy notice

The short version

Signing in (needed only for Ask Jamaica) uses Google or an emailed link, so we hold your email address and, if Google shares it, your name. We never hold a password or payment details.
We measure visits and basic interactions to understand which pages and tools are useful.
Calculators run in your browser. The amounts and dates you enter are not sent to or stored by JaRanks.
Sign-in, security and measurement services may use cookies or similar technology, as explained below.
We count taps on Call, WhatsApp, Website and Directions buttons so we know which listings people actually use. We use a coded connection identifier instead of storing your IP address in these records.
Questions you type into Ask Jamaica, and the answers, are stored so we can improve the site. They are stored with your account and a coded connection identifier, not your raw IP address.

What we collect and why

Tap actions

When you tap Call, WhatsApp, Website, Directions or Email on a profile, we record the listing, the page you were on, the referring page if your browser sends one, the time and a coded connection identifier. We use this to understand which listings are useful and to spot problems such as dead phone numbers.

Ask Jamaica

Ask Jamaica is available to signed-in users. We store your question, the answer, the sources it cited, your account identifier and a coded connection identifier. We share your question and relevant JaRanks information with a service provider to generate the answer. We do not add your account name, email address, IP address or browser details to that request. Anything you include in your question is part of the text we process. Account and connection records help us enforce usage limits and prevent abuse.

Server logs

Like every website, our hosting keeps short-lived technical logs (request path, status, time, IP address) for security and debugging. These are rotated automatically and are not used for analytics.

Cookieless traffic analytics

We collect basic visit information, including pages viewed, referring pages, language, screen size, device and browser details, and approximate country. This helps us improve the site. This cookieless measurement uses your connection information to group visits and estimate location without storing your raw IP address or setting an analytics cookie. We do not link these statistics to your signed-in account.

For tools, we record which tool was used and basic actions such as calculating, opening a source, printing or copying a link. These records do not include the amounts, dates, vehicle details, account numbers, results or text you enter.

Services that help run the site

We use service providers for hosting, sign-in, email delivery, answering questions, security and traffic measurement. They process the information needed for those functions. External measurement and security services also receive technical connection and usage information when your browser contacts them.

Email

If you email [email protected], we keep the correspondence for as long as it takes to resolve the matter and for a record of corrections made.

If you choose to subscribe, we store your email address and subscription status in our JaRanks newsletter service. We use it to send the JaRanks emails you requested. Newsletter signup is separate from signing in; creating an account does not subscribe you. New signups require you to confirm your email address. You can unsubscribe using the link in any newsletter. We retain opt-out and delivery-failure records to avoid emailing addresses that should not receive messages.

We use coded identifiers to limit repeated signup attempts. Your browser remembers a dismissed newsletter popup for 30 days, or a signup request for 180 days, so it does not repeatedly interrupt you. This browser storage contains no email address.

Cookies

Sign-in and security features use essential cookies. Other measurement and security services may use cookies or similar technology. You can control cookies through your browser settings, although blocking essential cookies may stop some features from working. Calculator inputs are not placed in cookies or shared links.

Information about providers

Profiles contain business contact details and, where available, registration numbers drawn from public registers. This is professional information published by the regulator or by the provider. Practitioners who want a profile removed can ask via the contact page and we remove it within three business days.

Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2020 you may ask what personal data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or erased, and object to processing. Write to [email protected] and we will reply within three business days. You may also complain to the Office of the Information Commissioner of Jamaica.

Retention

Tap-action records and Ask conversations are retained to operate and improve the site and are reviewed yearly for anything we no longer need. Cookieless analytics is retained to compare aggregate traffic and tool use over time and is reviewed on the same schedule. Technical logs are kept for no more than 30 days.

Changes

When this notice changes, the “Last reviewed” date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted on the home page for 30 days.
